Gdańsk restaurant design wins top international award for being an ‘ecological work of art’
Polish architect Piotr Kuczia has been honored at the International Architecture Awards 2023 for his innovative design of “The Solarlux Cabin House” restaurant near Gdańsk. The restaurant was awarded in the “Private Homes” category for its unique and ecological design.
The restaurant, supported on stilts that give the impression of it floating on air, features a gable roof, a simple yet stylish interior, and a glass winter garden with a view of the sea that allows sunlight to flood the space. During colder periods, the winter garden acts as a large air collector, using solar radiation for heating.
The judges were impressed not only by the restaurant’s simple shape and location, but also by its ecological solutions. An International Architecture Awards spokesperson described the design as an “ecological work of art.” The Awards, which have been running since 2004, aim to honor the best and most significant newly constructed buildings and projects in the field of architecture, urban planning, and landscape design.
Piotr Kuczia, a multi-award-winning Polish architect, expressed his delight at receiving the recognition. He believes that valuable architecture involves getting rid of the unnecessary and reducing it to its essence in response to existing conditions. Kuczia’s intuitive approach to design, combined with his years of experience and knowledge, led him to envision the restaurant’s simple, archetypal shape with a steep roof.
The high roof serves a practical purpose as well. It responds to the building’s Winter Garden by allowing heated air to rise and escape through opening skylights, ensuring a comfortable microclimate inside.
In addition to his architectural achievements, Kuczia is an educator and expert in the field of green building, with over 20 years of experience. He has received numerous international awards, including the International Design Award and Green Good Design. His studio, “Kuczia architect,” is based in Osnabrück, Germany.
