TSMC Pledges 100% Renewable Energy by 2040, Leading the Way in Sustainable Semiconductor Manufacturing

Title: TSMC Commits to 100% Renewable Energy by 2040

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker, has recently made a significant commitment to using 100% renewable energy and achieving zero indirect carbon emissions from electricity consumption by 2040. This announcement was made on the occasion of International Ozone Layer Protection Day, emphasizing the company’s dedication to sustainability.

TSMC has joined the RE100 initiative, a global effort that brings together influential brands committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity. By setting a net-zero target for 2040, TSMC aims to exclusively rely on renewable energy sources by that year. The company plans to accelerate its sustainability process and increase the proportion of renewable energy used in its production and operation sites from 40% to 60% by 2030.

In its sustainable blueprint, TSMC envisions a future where carbon emissions reach zero and gradually decline from 2025 onwards. The company aims to bring carbon emissions back to 2020 levels by 2030. TSMC will regularly review the progress of its goals and take practical actions to achieve a permanent zero-carbon future.

TSMC’s commitment to renewable energy began in July 2020 when it became the first semiconductor brand to join the RE100 initiative. Initially aiming for 100% renewable energy use by 2050, the company has now advanced its timeline by 10 years, highlighting its dedication to sustainability and combating climate change.

The RE100 initiative, launched by the international non-profit Climate Group in partnership with CDP, encourages brands to transition to renewable energy. As one of the RE100 members with the highest electricity demand, TSMC has set a 2030 sustainability goal of generating 25% of its manufacturing plants’ electricity from clean sources.

TSMC’s commitment to renewable energy is a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for the semiconductor industry. By adopting renewable energy sources and reducing carbon emissions, TSMC is leading the way in mitigating the environmental impact of its operations and setting an example for other companies to follow.

As the world’s reliance on technology continues to grow, it is crucial for companies in the tech industry to prioritize renewable energy and work towards a more sustainable future. TSMC’s commitment to 100% renewable energy by 2040 is a testament to its dedication to environmental stewardship and its vision of a carbon-neutral future.
