TSMC Sets Ambitious Timeline for 100% Renewable Energy Consumption by 2040, Ten Years Ahead of Schedule

TSMC, one of the world’s largest semiconductor companies, has announced an accelerated timeline for its renewable energy goals. The company now aims to achieve 100 percent renewable energy consumption for all its global operations by 2040, ten years ahead of its previous target. Additionally, TSMC has raised its 2030 target for company-wide renewable energy consumption to 60 percent, up from 40 percent.

As a responsible corporate citizen, TSMC was the first semiconductor company to join the RE100 initiative, which focuses on renewable energy adoption. The company sees renewable energy as a crucial strategy for achieving net-zero emissions. TSMC has already signed the world’s largest renewable corporate power purchase agreement and continues to pursue long-term green power procurement contracts in Taiwan. The goal is to drive the development of a diverse renewable energy industry, attract international renewable energy investment, and create more supply for the domestic market.

In line with its commitment to sustainability, TSMC has taken steps to promote renewable energy adoption within its supply chain. The company has established a platform to match renewable energy with industrial power consumption, enabling its suppliers and subsidiaries to secure stable joint procurement prices. This initiative aims to accelerate the green transformation of the domestic semiconductor supply chain.

Furthermore, TSMC has expanded its public welfare efforts by installing solar panels at social welfare organizations at no cost through the TSMC Charity Foundation’s “Public Welfare Green Energy Project.” The power generated by these panels is sold, and the proceeds are returned to the organizations. TSMC plans to have 16 such installations operational by 2024, with more to come in the future.

Dr. Mark Liu, Chairman of TSMC and Chairman of the Company’s ESG Steering Committee, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability. He stated that TSMC understands its key position in the global semiconductor industry and the impact it has on economies. Recognizing the urgency of climate change, TSMC has made green manufacturing the foundation of its sustainability management. The company aims to strengthen its green management and innovation, collaborate with the industry to build a green supply chain, and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy to achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

TSMC’s accelerated renewable energy goals demonstrate its dedication to environmental sustainability and its leadership in the semiconductor industry. By prioritizing renewable energy adoption and driving green initiatives within its supply chain, TSMC is setting an example for other companies to follow in the transition towards a more sustainable future.
