Title: World’s First Solar Bicycles Set for Roll-Out: A Pedalling Transformation
In a groundbreaking development, Baroda Electric Meters Ltd (BEM), an Indian company, has successfully developed the world’s first commercially viable solar bicycles. These innovative bicycles, created by engineering students, are equipped with a solar panel and a microcontroller-based battery charge controller. BEM is currently in talks with the government to secure subsidies that would further reduce the cost of these eco-friendly bicycles.
The solar bicycles, which can be fully charged in just 4-5 hours, have the capacity to carry individuals weighing up to 100kg. This impressive feat is made possible by the microcontroller-based battery charge controller, which maximizes the power extracted from the 40W solar panel and delivers it to the battery. The bicycles have been hailed as a disruptive innovation in the field of electric mobility.
The project, aptly named “Worldwide First Solar Bicycle Rollout – Disruptive Innovation in Electric Mobility,” was initiated as a startup with the assistance of electrical engineering students from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM) in Vallabh Vidhyanagar. The prototype of the solar bicycle was developed two years ago by four talented engineering students – Meet Mehta, Hitarth Solanki, Mustafa Munshi, and Rushi Shah – under the guidance of Dr. Vithal Kamat, the managing director of BEM Ltd.
Dr. Kamat explained that the team indigenously developed technologies such as the solar maximum power point tracking charge controller and solar panel mounting suspension to convert a regular bicycle into a solar-powered one. Both of these technologies have been patented, showcasing the groundbreaking nature of this innovation.
The solar bicycles are set to roll out from Anand, also known as the Milk City, located in the state of Gujarat. Anand has a rich history of pioneering advancements, having previously ushered in the White Revolution in the country. Now, it is harnessing the power of the sun to revolutionize transportation.
Apart from being an eco-friendly mode of transport, these solar bicycles offer a unique blend of fitness and sustainability. Fitness enthusiasts can pedal these bicycles for exercise, while others can ride them like any other e-vehicle. This versatility makes them an attractive option for individuals seeking an alternative and sustainable means of transportation.
The recognition and support for this innovative project have been remarkable. The solar bicycle project received an award from the India Smart Grid Forum, a prestigious think-tank consisting of government officials, environmentalists, technocrats, and other stakeholders. The forum recognized the solar bicycle as the first commercially viable option of its kind globally.
As the world grapples with the urgent need for sustainable solutions, the development of these solar bicycles represents a significant step forward. By harnessing the power of the sun, these bicycles offer a clean and renewable mode of transportation that can help reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.
With further government support and subsidies, these solar bicycles have the potential to become a game-changer in the field of electric mobility. The successful roll-out of these innovative bicycles not only showcases India’s engineering prowess but also serves as an inspiration for other countries to explore sustainable transportation options.
The future of transportation lies in the hands of such disruptive innovations, and the world eagerly awaits the global adoption of these solar bicycles. As we pedal towards a greener and more sustainable future, these solar bicycles offer a glimmer of hope and a promising vision of what lies ahead.
