Hawaiian Electric Company Partners with Ameresco for Maui’s ‘Ūkiu Energy 40-Megawatt Renewable Site’

Hawaiian Electric Company’s commitment to clean energy, Ameresco, Inc. has been awarded the development of the ‘Ūkiu Energy 40-megawatt renewable energy site in Maui. This project aims to enhance grid reliability and support Hawaii’s goal of achieving 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality by 2045. The innovative facility will feature a biofuel-powered generator with six dual-fuel engines, providing firm renewable energy and flexible capacity to integrate intermittent renewable resources. In case of power outages, it can quickly come online to help repower the grid, reducing Maui’s reliance on foreign fuel sources and supporting decarbonization efforts. This initiative marks a significant step towards a more sustainable energy future for the island.
